HERAKLES2 or OVER-DETERMINED

There is a stranger moving in the white male connotated public (stage) space. A female, non-white, self-confident body. Fighting against the recognized heteronomy. Tries to get out. Not seeing the enemy, because there are to many of them, doubts, falls down. TO ADAPT TO THE MOVEMENTS OF THE ENEMY. TO AVOID THEM. TO PREVENT THEM. TO ENCOUNTER THEM. ADAPT AND NOT ADAPT. TO ADAPT IN NOT ADAPTING. AGGRESSIVE AVOIDING. EVASIVE ATTACKING. (Müller) HERAKLES 2 or OVER-DETERMINED works with everyday racism, based on texts from Frantz Fanon, Judith Butler and Heiner Müller. On a second layer it´s also about the deeper institutionalized racism and yes, in the end it´s about: what are the possibilities to live with it?

The powerful play (of the dancer) alone with the parachute is extraordinarily fascinating. (taz – die Tageszeitung 28.10.16)

Concept:

Based on HERAKLES 2 or THE HYDRA, written by Heiner Müller, we developed at a residency in september 2016 at theaterschlachthof Bremen a dance performance about privileges, prejudices, racism. The dancer is fighting, like Herakles, with the invisible aggressor, with the inequality of the weapons. THE FOREST IS THE ANIMAL. (Müller)

We try to find a own position in this conflict of discrimination, aesthetically but also content related. We want to create a shelter, an own language, an own physicality. Far, far away from bias. But never able to escape from the own over-determining (Fanon. Black Skin, White Masks).

Our aesthetic research begins with an olive-green parachute material, apocalypse now! pictures creating, forest images developing and as place of retreat. We were also inspired by female southamerican icons like Frida Kahlo and Violeta Parra.

Description:

First you see the olive-green parachute material. Bloated, slowly spacing onto the ground. Hands appear and grab the material, tighten it, shorten it, until it´s a knot. From there the dancer comes out. Steps, the material on the shoulders. Twisting around. Now the contest between material and audience starts. Who gains the upper hand? Who defines the movements? From there: developing movements,

images and actions. The dance performance is feasible in every minimum 5 to 5 meters room. There is also the possibility to place it in a museum as a long-durational. Therefor we change the beginning and the ending point, then it´s about the length and how this layer effects the over-determined body. The everyday fight, again and again, against racism and bias.
